Tens Of Millions Impacted by Severe Weather: Don't Get Caught Unprepared
Across the US, tens of millions of people are being impacted by severe weather. Here are the updates you need to know about. Staying informed can mean life or death, and that's why you need an accurate weather app.
Severe Weather Impacting Tens of Millions across the US
From coast to coast, the United States is experiencing a range of severe weather conditions this week, including numerous wildfires, extreme heat, severe thunderstorms, potential flash flooding, hazardous air quality, and the risk of tropical cyclone formation off the Southeast coast.
In the West, dozens of wildfires are burning out of control, according to NBC News. As of this writing, the Gifford Fire in Santa Barbara has burned more than 60,000 acres and produced a smoke tornado. In Arizona, the largest blaze in the continental US is the Dragon Bravo fire, which has been blazing for over a month and has consumed more than 123,000 acres near the north rim of the Grand Canyon.
In addition, smoke from hundreds of Canadian wildfires has triggered air quality alerts in at least a dozen US states, extending from Minnesota to Maine, and enveloping the Great Lakes states and much of the Northeast.
The National Weather Prediction Center forecasts heavy rain with potential flash flooding over portions of Georgia and the Carolinas, while rain and thunderstorms are forecast over much of the South, Southeast, upper Midwest, and Northeast into Friday. In the upper Midwest on Friday, there is a potential for severe thunderstorms affecting five states.
Meanwhile, forecasters from the National Hurricane Center are monitoring two disturbances in the Atlantic for possible cyclone development, particularly one located off the coast of the southeastern US with a 40% chance of development within the next 7 days.
Is Your Weather App Keeping You Safe? It May Be Time to Switch.
The preceding weather report for this week serves as a stark reminder that dangerous and severe weather situations are becoming all too common in the US. Regardless of whether the driving factor is climate change, 100- or 1000-year cycles, the simple fact remains that these are real and present dangers.
Not only does information matter — the correct information is critical. This is never more true than in the case of weather apps. There are numerous free weather apps, including those from well-known weather services. But have you paid close attention to their accuracy?
If you compare some of these apps to your local TV news station, you might notice that very often, some of these apps are far less accurate than your local news. This may not matter when you are at home and can get your local news as a backup, but what happens when you're away from home?
When traveling, it's essential to have accurate weather reports. Not only for the location you are in, but for multiple locations. You may want to check the weather for your next destination, the situation at home, or the location of other loved ones.
