Historic Flooding Strikes Tennessee, Prompting Swift-Water Rescues, 3 dead
At least three people have died after a historic level of rain and flooding struck Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Tuesday. According to the Hamilton County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, a family comprised of two adults and one child died after a tree fell on their car.
Mayor Wamp declared a state of emergency as of 8 AM on Wednesday.
It was the second-widest day in the city's history since records began in 1879, with Chattanooga Airport recording 6.42 inches of rain on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.
The floodwaters prompted swift water rescues to help stranded motorists and locals trapped in their homes, and first responders saw one man swept away, who authorities say is still missing, NBC News reported.
