East Coast Beaches Close as Hurricane Erin Brings Life-Threatening Flooding

Meteorologists warn Hurricane Erin is huge — its hurricane-force winds span 230 miles from its center — and may bring life-threatening flooding to North Carolina. Get the latest updates and discover an app to keep you safe.

Hurricane Erin Forces Beach Closures Amid Life-Threatening Flooding Risk

At various locations along the US East Coast, beaches are being closed due to the risk of rip currents, which span from Florida to New England. Erin was expected to move between Bermuda and the US East Coast between Wednesday and Thursday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Waves up to fifteen feet were expected to start on Wednesday, which could leave some roadways underwater for several days, according to the BBC.

As of 8 AM EDT on Wednesday, Erin was a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph and moving north-northwest at 13 mph, CBS News reported. During the next day or so, forecasters say some strengthening is possible. A major hurricane is defined as having maximum sustained winds of 111 mph or higher, capable of causing devastating damage.

Evacuation orders in North Carolina due to flood risk

A storm surge watch has been issued for North Carolina's Outer Banks by the National Weather Service (NWS). Forecasters said the area should be prepared for days of potential life-threatening flooding.

"Breaking waves of 15 to 20 feet plus coastal flood and storm surge could overwash dunes and flood homes, flood roads and make some communities impassable," the Deputy Director for the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said, NPR reported.

On Monday, the North Carolina Department of Transportation issued a mandatory evacuation order for all visitors to Ocracoke and Hatteras islands, which also took effect for residents on Tuesday. A state of emergency was also issued for Ocracoke Island by officials in Hyde County on Sunday, and Dare County also declared a state of emergency.
