Tsunami and Volcano: Stark Reminder to Always Be Prepared for Evacuations
A record 8.8 earthquake triggered massive-scale tsunami alerts, and now a volcano has erupted. It serves as a reminder to everyone to be prepared for emergencies at all times and have a weather app that keeps you informed.
Tsunami Alert: Alerts extend from Alaska to South America
One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded, an 8.8-magnitude event, struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering widespread tsunami warnings, including in Japan, Alaska, Hawaii, the U.S. West Coast, and Central and South America.

Evacuations were also ordered across the Pacific, with beaches closed, as people were urged to head for higher ground.
As waves hit Japan, nearly 2 million people were evacuated, according to NBC News.
In Hawaii, Kahului, Maui saw waves up to 5.7 feet, Hilo saw 4.9-foot waves, and waves of 3.9 feet in Hanalei. Crescent City in California saw 3.6-foot waves, while 3-foot waves reached Arena Cove.
A tsunami warning remains in effect for portions of the Oregon/California border and the Northern California coast, including the San Francisco Bay.
However, the NOAA has canceled the tsunami advisory for the area extending from Rincon Point, southeast of Santa Barbara, all the way to the California/Mexico border, including the Los Angeles area.
The 8.8-magnitude temblor was the strongest earthquake since 2011, and is among the top 10 strongest earthquakes ever recorded.
Volcano erupts
The earthquake off the far east Russian coast wasn't the only geological activity; Russia's Kamchatka Branch of Geophysical Survey announced that the Klyuchevskoy volcano in Kamchatka has erupted.
The Reality of Year-Round Emergency Preparedness
Natural disasters don't follow schedules or seasonal patterns. Earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and tsunamis can strike without warning throughout any month of the year. This unpredictability makes continuous emergency preparedness not just advisable—it's essential for protecting your family and property.
Weather emergencies and geological events serve as stark reminders that preparation cannot be postponed until "disaster season" arrives. The time to create your emergency plan is now, during calm periods when you can think clearly and make informed decisions.
Essential Components of Emergency Preparedness
Every household needs a comprehensive family evacuation plan that designates multiple escape routes and meeting locations. Identify both nearby and distant meeting points—one within your neighborhood and another outside your immediate area in case local routes become impassable.
Practice these evacuation routes regularly with all family members, including children, who should memorize key addresses and phone numbers.
Develop a communication plan
Develop a robust communication plan with an out-of-state contact person who can coordinate information if local phone lines become overwhelmed. Ensure every family member carries emergency contact cards and understands the communication protocol.
Create an emergency kit that's ready year-round
Your emergency kit should sustain your household for at least 72 hours, though experts recommend preparing for one week. Stock non-perishable food, water (one gallon per person per day), essential medications, flashlights, a battery-powered radio, first aid supplies, and extra batteries. Don't forget to pack supplies for your pets, including food, water, medications, carriers, and leashes.
Keep important documents and photos ready to go
Store important documents in waterproof containers or pouches, including insurance policies, identification cards, bank records, medical information, and family photos. Store copies both physically and digitally in cloud storage accessible from any location.
The Keys to Staying Informed and Ready
Modern weather and emergency alert apps provide real-time notifications about developing threats in your area. Enable location-based alerts for multiple types of emergencies, not just weather events. These technologies offer precious minutes or hours of warning that can make the difference between a safe evacuation and a last-minute scramble.
Regular preparedness isn't paranoia—it's responsible planning that transforms potential tragedies into manageable situations, allowing your family to respond calmly and effectively.
