Experts Predict Potentially Deadly Hurricane Season: What You Must Know

Experts are predicting an above-average hurricane season for 2025, with some cautioning that a few storms could be the most deadly of the decade. Here's what you need to know, plus an app to keep you alert and ready.

Above-Average Hurricane Season Could Bring the Most Deadly Storms of the Decade

Weather forecasting experts from various institutions and organizations have posted their projections for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Nearly across the board, predictions forecast above-average storms this year.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30 and is the time of year when tropical or subtropical cyclones are more likely to form in the North Atlantic Ocean.

While hurricanes predominantly affect parts of the US along the Gulf Coast, Southeast, and Atlantic seaboard, these storms can still cause significant damage as they move inland through heavy rainfall, flooding, and strong winds.

Before we dive into the projections for 2025, let's first look at some of the averages, highs, and lows.

Average storms (1991-2020): Named storms 14.4, hurricanes 7.2, major hurricanes 3.2.

Record high activity: Named storms 30, hurricanes 15, major hurricanes 7.

Record low activity: Named storms 1, hurricanes 0, major hurricanes 0.

2025 Hurricane Season Predictions

Colorado State University (CSU): Named storms 17, hurricanes 9, major hurricanes 4.

The Weather Company (TWC): Named storms 19, hurricanes 9, major hurricanes 4.

AEM: Named storms 17, hurricanes 8, major hurricanes 4.

UA, UPenn, SMA, and MU predicted an above-normal season. Only TSR predicted a hurricane season that matched the average in all categories.

However, one of the most essential projections of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season has yet to be released: the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) outlook. The organization will release its forecast during a news conference on Thursday, May 22, at the Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Center in Gretna, Louisiana, and virtually, the US Department of Commerce reported.
