Deadly and Severe Weather Marks the Last Week of April
The final week of April is coming to a close with continued rounds of severe weather from the Plains to the Northeast, the results of which have already turned deadly.
The first round of severe weather began on Sunday evening, when a tornado was blamed for derailing a BNSF coal train near Ashby, News Channel Nebraska reported. About 130 cars were derailed, but the lead locomotive was unaffected. The two crew members were reportedly uninjured. However, at least two locomotives at the rear of the train were overturned. At least five tornadoes and 3-inch diameter hail were reported in the region on Sunday.
On Monday, severe weather trekked from the central US eastward, knocking out power for hundreds of thousands of people. Affected areas saw damaging wind gusts, tornadoes, and hail larger than baseballs, CNN reported.
On Tuesday, at least three people were killed in Pennsylvania as severe weather rolled through the area. Live electrical wires electrocuted one man, Fox Weather reported.
Straight-line winds in Pennsylvania gusted over 80-90 mph, which are more forceful than many smaller EF-0 and EF-1 tornadoes. Missouri also saw 91-mph wind gusts. Heavy rain across parts of Oklahoma led to significant flooding.
On Wednesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued flood and flash flood warnings and watches from central and northeastern Texas, throughout Oklahoma, and into western Arkansas and southern Missouri. Warnings and watches also included severe thunderstorms. These areas also had a Level 3 enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms.
The threat moves into parts of the South and the Ohio Valley on Thursday, with a marginal threat over Central Texas and south-central Oklahoma on Friday.
