Two More Huge Earthquakes Strike Japan and Alaska. A Warning?
A magnitude 7.0 struck Alaska on December 6, followed by a 7.6 mega-quake in Japan on December 8, prompting tsunami fears. On Wednesday, December 10, a second earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck Japan. Are these a warning? Plus, does your weather app keep you alerted in real time?
Spate of Earthquakes Begs the Question: Is the Big One Lurking?
A series of earthquakes within days of one another has jangled nerves and raised fears that a massive temblor could be on the way.
On December 6, a major 7.0 quake struck Alaska, which, luckily, occurred in a remote area. This was followed on December 8 by a 7.6 mega-quake in northern Japan that caused at least 30 injuries and prompted tsunami warnings. These were later lifted. However, tens of thousands of people were evacuated from their homes, USA Today reported.
A series of aftershocks was recorded for both earthquakes. Japanese authorities warned citizens of the possibility of another, more powerful quake striking within the next seven days.
On December 10, a magnitude 5.7 quake struck off the eastern coast of Honshu, Japan, Reuters reported. After the temblor, there were no immediate reports of damage.
An Average of 16 Major Earthquakes Occur Annually Worldwide
According to the US Geological Survey, an average of 16 major earthquakes occur worldwide each year. This includes one earthquake of magnitude 8.0 or higher and 15 quakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher. These statistics are derived from records that date back to around 1900. Additionally, the long-term average of major quakes per year has been surpassed on about a dozen occasions over the last four to five decades.
