The Thunder Moon Arrives This Week: How to Stay Alert for Severe Weather
The Thunder Moon arrives this week, and with devastating floods in Texas and a tropical storm in the Carolinas, all serve as a reminder to stay alert for severe weather. We'll introduce you to a free app for staying weather aware.
The Thunder Moon or Buck Moon Arrives This Week
The night sky will welcome the arrival of the Thunder Moon, also called the Buck Moon, and will be the first full moon of the astronomical summer.
July's full moon was called the Thunder Moon by the Western Abenaki, native North American Algonquian-speaking peoples who lived in the Northeastern Woodlands of Canada and the United States. They associated the July full moon with the frequent thunderstorms.
Another name associated with July's full moon is the Buck Moon, which was also derived from Native Americans, noting at this time that the antlers of box (male deer) were in full-growth mode at this time of year.
In July 2025, the full moon will reach peak illumination on Thursday, July 10, at 4:37 PM Eastern Daylight Time. Look towards the southeast after sunset to spot the moon rising in the sky.
The moon will appear full about a day before and a day after its peak illumination date.
Early July storms have deadly effects, more rain coming
On July 4, catastrophic flash flooding struck Kerr County, Texas, where the Guadalupe River rose more than 20 feet in under two hours. As of Wednesday, at least 111 people were confirmed dead, with over 170 missing, as search and rescue efforts entered their sixth day. More storms are expected to bring a level 3-of-4 risk of flooding and rainfall to parts of central Texas, including already hard-hit areas, this week, CNN reported.
Devastating flash floods also struck Ruidoso, New Mexico, sweeping away at least one home, leaving 3 dead and three missing, BBC reported.
Tropical Storm Chantal made landfall at 4 AM EDT on Sunday, July 6, near Litchfield Beach, South Carolina. The storm moved inland on Monday. It weakened to a tropical depression, although it was still delivering heavy rainfall of over two inches per hour, which could lead to flash flooding. On Monday, the eye of the storm was located over the North Carolina-Virginia border and is expected to move over Virginia, into Maryland and Delaware, then New Jersey, before retreating toward the Atlantic. At the same time, its outer bands might still reach portions of Long Island, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts as it moves Northeast and out to sea, AccuWeather reported.
