Snowstorms Clash with Record Highs to Bring Severe Weather Threat to US
The first week of 2026 brings a clash of two fronts and two cross-country storms, rain and snowstorms colliding with a strong ridge of high pressure and record warm temperatures, bringing a severe weather threat that will affect millions. Check out our free weather apps for real-time alerts and multilocation weather monitoring.
Snow, Rain, and Severe Weather Will Affect Millions This Week
According to multiple forecast models, two distinct areas of low pressure are expected to move out of the southern Rockies late in the week.
One storm system will deliver snowstorms from the Four Corners to the Great Lakes.
A second storm system will move out of the southwest, bringing rain across the region, into the southern plains, much of the Midwest, and stretching over the Mississippi and Tennessee valleys. In addition, the storm system will also create a flash flood threat over parts of Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana.
Unseasonable warmth across the South and East
From 270 to 240 million Americans will face temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above average this week. As of the previous Sunday, 28 records had been broken in parts of the Rockies, Southwest, and Central Plains. As the heat moves northward, by Friday, parts of the Great Lakes could also experience record-breaking heat, with Detroit poised to break an 80-year record, according to Fox Forecast Center.
Severe weather threat
A cold front from the two storms will collide with unseasonable warmth from the South and the Southern Plains, potentially bringing severe weather. Beginning on Friday, parts of Texas and the South will be under a Level 2 of 5 risk of severe thunderstorms, according to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center. The threat extends over parts of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, Tennessee, Kentucky, and the southeastern corner of Missouri.
