NASA Confirms Earth has a 'Second Moon'
This week, NASA confirmed a recent discovery by the University of Hawaii and officially confirmed that Earth has a second "quasi-moon."
Earth has a Second Moon, according to NASA
A small asteroid that has been traveling with the Earth since the 1960s was discovered by a team at the University of Hawaii during a routine telescope survey earlier this year, according to Yahoo.
The asteroid has been given the designation 2025 PN7, and scientists have estimated its size to be between 18 and 36 meters in width, roughly equivalent to the size of a small building.
Astronomers determined that 2025 PN7 has been traveling nearly in sync with Earth's orbit for roughly 60 years. Unlike a true moon, which orbits around the Earth, the object keeps pace with Earth's path around the sun. In fact, 2025 PN7's orbit is so similar that it appears to be shadowing our planet.
However, the competing gravity of the sun and neighboring planets alters the distance 2025 PN7 maintains from Earth. At its closest, the object comes within 4 million kilometers, or approximately ten times farther away than the moon. At its most distant, the gap becomes 17 million kilometers.
Following weeks of observation, NASA confirmed that the data indicate that 2025 PN7 is a "quasi-moon." Throughout history, astronomers have confirmed the existence of only eight quasi-moons.
If the orbit of 2025 PN7 holds, astronomers say our "second moon" will stay with the Earth until roughly 2083, then begin drifting away into open space once more.
